Acoustic Engineer

The role

We are seeking an Acoustic Engineer to join our engineering team, working in the field of physical acoustics to support engineering projects involving structural and acoustic design of composite structures. Projects are typically for Marine Defence applications working directly with OEMs or 1st tier suppliers to OEMs.

Tods Defence is part of the Unitech group and we specialise in the design and manufacture of acoustic and radar solutions for submarines and surface ships, developing and producing a wide range of materials and applied treatments. Our PU coated composite sonar domes and acoustic windows protect the performance of vital sonar and communication equipment and are in service with over 20 of the world's navies.

Our dedicated team of skilled Engineers create designs that meet the customers' acoustic, structural, and spatial requirements. Designs are productionised and manufactured in our on-site factory. Good communications within the Engineering team and between the manufacturing teams is essential to ensure a realisable design.

As an Acoustic Engineer you will be working in the field of physical acoustics and using PAFEC acoustic software and in-house programs to model how the physical properties of the fibre reinforced plastics and polyurethane solids of the domes and acoustic windows influence the propagation of acoustic waves. Using in-house materials, you will be designing the acoustic aspects of the products to meet the customer's acoustic specifications. The role includes specifying and analysing test results, developing our physical acoustic modelling methodologies, and the development and maintenance of our in-house computer codes.

The person

You must have a relevant degree in either Engineering, Acoustics or Physics and demonstrate excellent analytical skills with high levels of accuracy and attention to detail, and strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability and confidence to write technical reports at all levels and give technical presentations to customer specialists.

You will need a working knowledge of the MS Office suite and an ability to write and develop computer programs based on mathematical acoustic theory and write supporting documentation. A strong ability for mathematics and computer coding is essential to this task. In addition, a knowledge of finite elements methods to be able to mesh relevant acoustic models would be advantageous.

The role will require use of PATRAN (or other meshing programs), PAFEC, and in-house FORTRAN programs, and knowledge of fibre reinforce plastics, polymer science and an understanding of sonar and sonar processing. Prior knowledge of these programs and topics will be advantageous, but training will be provided as required by a mixture of in-house training and dedicated courses to a suitable candidate.

We are committed to the development of our people and there are opportunities to improve your existing skills and develop new skills relevant to the role.  Personal and professional development is actively encouraged and you will be supported to obtain membership of a professional body and subsequent CPD.

Due to the nature of the work involved, you must be eligible for security clearance to work on UK protectively marked material.

Your normal place of work will be the Company's premises located at Portland, Dorset. Our site is in relative close proximity to some of Tods Defence customers who have offices in the Weymouth and Dorchester area.

Weymouth & Portland, was the host venue of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic sailing events and the Portland Harbour Sailing Academy is an excellent world class facility for any level of participation in water sports, including, dinghy sailing, windsurfing, diving, canoeing and kitesurfing.

As well as being a beautiful and dramatic coastline, the 'Isle' of Portland is the sport climbing capital of Europe and there are many opportunities to climb on Portland or in nearby locations along the Jurassic coast. Weymouth and Portland is also a thriving centre for triathlons. BustinSkin is based in Weymouth and organise several local triathlons and Dirty Devil events of various distances throughout the year.

From Portland, you can enjoy spectacular views across Weymouth Bay stretching across the horizon taking in the World Heritage Jurassic Coastline.
